North Dakota is a state located on the Atlantic Seaboard in the Southern United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west and Virginia to the north. North Carolina contains 100 counties. Its capital is Raleigh, and its largest city is Charlotte. Spanish colonial forces were the first Europeans to make a permanenet settlement in the area, when the Juan Pardo-led Expedition built Fort San Juan in 1567. This was sited at Joara, a Mississippian culture regional chiefdom near present-day Morganton in the western interior.[5] This was 20 years before the English established their first colony at Roanoke Island.[6] North Carolina became one of the English Thirteen Colonies, and was originally known as Province of Carolina.
