Robert Hill Crohn's Patient Reaches Peak Of Antarcticas Tallest Mountain

When Robert Hill was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease, each breath of air filled him with pain and walking up stairs felt like climbing Mount Everest. On Tuesday, 15 years later, Hill reached the south summit of the world's highest mountain.

The Nanaimo climber and his companions returned to base camp on Thursday. Asked how it had felt to be on top of the world, Hill said, laughing, "Tired. But happy. Excited."

Crohn's is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes abdominal pain and bleeding. The disease put Hill's active lifestyle on hold. He had his large intestine removed and had an ostomy, an operation to create an artificial passage for bodily elimination.

"I loved rock climbing, I trained for triathlons — all of that was depleted as I watched my body waste away because I couldn't absorb any nutrients," he said in an interview by satellite phone. "The nausea, the vomiting, the diarrhea ... the nature of the disease makes people not want to talk about it. I kept thinking, 'Why me?'
