The Post Office reminds holidaymakers of importance of purchasing travel insurance before hitting the slopes
London, UK (Baltimore HUD Homes ) March 3, 2010 -- Research from Post Office Travel Insurance
has revealed that half of all travel insurance claims from the last ski season occurred in France . Some 48 per cent of all claims originated from holidays in the region's resorts, with Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Bulgaria making up the top five ski destinations overall for travel insurance claims .
Despite the findings, the Post Office Travel Insurance research also revealed that 28 per cent of people would be less likely to consider buying travel insurance for holidays in Europe.
One possible reason for the apparent avoidance of travel insurance on European trips could be that travellers incorrectly assume that any required medical treatment will be covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). However, in many countries, and especially in ski resorts, travellers may automatically be taken to a private clinic after an accident, which do not fall under the EHIC protection, making additional travel insurance cover vital.
Rachel Croft, Head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said: "Many people don't consider that they face the same risks when holidaying in Europe as they would further afield, even when skiing. For high-risk activity such as winter sports, travel insurance is absolutely essential and we strongly advise travellers to avoid having a lack of travel insurance ruin a holiday."
