Canton is a neighborhood situated in Baltimore, Maryland, The neighborhood is positioned along Baltimore’s outer harbor in the southeastern division of the city. Canton Neighborhood History
The Canton neighborhood was urbanized from the plantation of seaman John O’Donnell in the late 1800s by his son Columbus O’Donnell, William Patterson, and Peter Cooper. The property was sold for mounting waterfront industrialized uses and homes to sustain blue collar workforce.
Throughout the early 1900s, European immigrants settled in the Canton neighborhood, the majority particularly were, Welsh, Irish, German and Polish. In the early 1980, as manufacturing moved out, new housing and marinas have been developed along the waterfront and gentrification of the accessible housing has occurred further inland.
The first branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library is located in Canton on O’Donnell Square. The branch has been in constant operation since 1886.
Canton Baltimore Neighborhood Housing
The bulk of homes in Canton are turn of the century two and three story row houses on narrow or wide streets. Several of the homes closer to the water date from the Civil War. New townhouses have been constructed at Canton Square and the Anchorage, as well as on vacant lots all through the Baltimore, Canton neighborhood.
