While demand for mortgages nationally has shrunk by a quarter in the past six months, the proportion of Victorian home buyers using grants of up to $12,000 is increasing.

The State Government says the figures are encouraging, but consumer groups and the Opposition say they simply reflect young people’s desperation to stop renting.

More than 25% of Victorians taking out home loans in the 12 months to June this year used first home buyers’ grants, up about 1% on the previous year and about 5% more than the five-year average.
