Baltimore’s Patterson Park is a selected historic district; the neighborhood is positioned between Canton to the south, Butchers Hill and Fells Point to the west, Highlandtown to the east and Library Square to the north, all surrounded by Patterson Park.
Patterson Park is a public park in Baltimore, Maryland, situated about one mile from the Baltimore Down town and bordered by eight, traditionally working class neighborhoods. Patterson Park is an historic green space; it’s the livelihood, beating heart of our entire area.
Rodger’s Bastion on Hampstead Hill, in the western end of the park, was the lookout tower points during the War of 1812.
Years later, the park officially came into being when William Patterson makes a contribution of six acres ” increasing enormously in 1827, and the city purchased 29 acres additional from the Patterson family in 1860. Additions and improvements to the park made after 1859 were funded through the city’s “park tax” on its streetcars., to its present 150 + acres, this green space makes amends for Southeast Baltimore’s monotony like an emerald jewel. Unfortunately, the park also suffered during Baltimore’s long decline. Numerous of its stately historic structures have been lost (the grand Music Pavilion to arson in 1972, for example).
Today, the park is once again our oasis to Bikers, runners, joggers, and everyone else can take advantage of the park’s commendably smooth pathways. The star attractions are the boat lake (in which you can fish, if you have a license, though this is rarely enforced), the marble fountain, the General Casimir Pulaski Monument, and the Pagoda, also known as the Patterson Park observatory, which has a great view of the city and is regard as a very nice building aesthetically. The sports fields are open for use to anyone who wants to play a game, and there are public tennis courts as well. Two playgrounds are also in the park, and there is a swimming pool open during the summer and a skating rink during winter. During the summer and early autumn, several festivals are hosted at the park. A wide variety of folks use the park. The area adjacent the park is part of an innovative urban renewal campaign by the city and neighborhood leaders.
The park’s role as a entertaining center goes back to the early 20th century, and its playing fields and ice rink are still well used and well loved.
New structures, such as a Children’s Playground, exercise trail and renovated swimming area are in the works. Patterson Park is the site of numerous festivals, concerts, sports activities and other events.
