If a kitchen is larger in size, more varieties of materials can, and usually should, be used. However, in smaller kitchens, fewer materials should be used to avoid the confusing look.
The materials of the kitchen appliances should also be taken into consideration based on the kitchen’s decor. One material which is safe to use in almost any kitchen is stainless steel. It has an ability to blend in when white or black appliances would stick out and appear tasteless.
The next challenge is selecting materials for the rest of the room. While there is a huge selection of materials available, spanning from the natural to the man made, they cannot all be splashed together in one room. A base material, such as the counter tops or the floor, must be chosen.
Then the other materials can be worked in around it. Moreover, the colors in the room should be in similar color families. Warm colors like yellow, orange, and green should be used with each other. In the same way, cool colors such as blues, reds, and purples work well together.
Mixing warm and cool colors should be avoided.
Metal types can also be a challenge in decorating. If too many different kinds of metal finishes are used in one room, it runs the risk of looking tacky. Instead, the metal used throughout the kitchen and on the cabinets should match to bring some semblance of order.
Additionally, the cabinet material should be taken into consideration. Painted cabinets are commonly seen in kitchens today and can create a beautiful look if completed correctly. However, if the wrong kind of paint is used, it can chip and create more of a problem than it is worth. Stained and finished cabinets are also popular options.
Lastly, surface materials should be taken into consideration when looking for or creating the perfect kitchen. Surface materials are anything such as metal drawer knobs and pulls, wood cabinet doors, or wallpaper, and while some people prefer to have only one type of surface material throughout the kitchen, others enjoy mixing and matching.
