Photo: Bloomberg FTSE 100 recouped earlier losses to rise for a ninth day in a row, lifted by a jump in US home sales that pushed the Dow Jones above 9,000 for the first time since January. Britain’s index of leading shares rose 66 – or 1.5pc – to a seven-month high of 4559.8 points as the US home sales and a batch of strong American corporate results eased fears over the world’s biggest economy and boosted mining and banking shares in London.

The stock market is proving again that its movements don’t always make sense. On July 23 the Dow Jones industrial average bounced back above 9,000 for the first time since January—on a day when Wall Street learned that more than 500,000 Americans filed for jobless claims last week. Meanwhile, earnings reports show corporate profits falling by almost one-third, yet the stock market sits at its highest point this year. In the first two weeks of earnings season , in fact, the broad S&P 500 is up 11%.

By TIM PARADIS AP NEW YORK – Investors celebrated news of another jump in home sales by propelling the Dow Jones industrials to their first close above 9,000 since January. The stock market’s best-known indicator shot up almost 190 points Thursday to 9,069.29, its highest level since November, and all the big indexes gained more than 2 percent. News that existing home sales rose in June for the third straight month and by a higher-than-expected amount led investors to extend a buying spree that has now lifted the Dow 923 points, or 11 percent, in just nine days.

Police say a man who was carrying a bomb and planning to hijack a plane and fly it into a high-rise building has been arrested in Jakarta. The man is said to be a follower of terrorist leader Noordin M Top, who police believe is responsible for the July 17th attacks on the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta. Six foreigners and one Indonesian were killed in last week’s bombing, Jakarta Globe . Fighting between government forces and armed separatists has killed eight people in Yemen.
