The Republicans are in trouble in the 2008 Presidential election. John McCain is the nominee for a political party that has lost its brand identity. In fact, public opinion polls show that McCain is only competitive with Barack Obama because of his history of independence from the Republican Party mainstream. The problem that the Republican Party has is that its voting base is just plain tired of the same old politics inside the Washington beltway. They are fed up with the ever increasing gasoline prices at the pump to fill their cars.

Fortune Small Business is out with its annual FSB 100 list , which measures the fastest growing (by revenues) publicly-traded small business listed on U.S. exchanges.  As always, it is both fascinating and frustrating.  Though the FSB 100 has many intriguing prospects, it is horribly laid out and almost impossible to assess in the format provided.  For example, there’s no way on the FSB site to get a handle on the market cap of the list except one company at a time.  Its another instance of a layout designed to generate unnecessary page views (and advertisement cpm’s) at the cost of reader convenience.

As we watch the hearings in the US Senate on Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination, we can reflect on some images generated about her in most parts of the conservative sector and in the mass media that often plays lapdog for conservatives’ views. One conservative view accents her previous talks and speeches (but not, interestingly, her decisions in this regard) that indicate her important experiential understandings as a woman of color (”wise Latina”) and attacks her for thinking and operating necessarily out of her own racialized and gendered experience, as if that is possible for white men to do .

Caught up in the afterglow of Robert Garcia’s Tuesday night  proposal of an Equal Benefits Ordinance—that is, a requirement that companies doing business with the City of Long Beach provide the same benefits to same-sex domestic partners as heterosexual married couples—the 1st district councilmember’s legislative director, Daniel Brezenoff sends along this list of companies that would qualify. It’s a pretty dreamy group, and that ain’t the half of it—not even close.

This op-ed first appeared in the Los Angeles Business Journal and is reprinted with their permission. Dave Smith, PhD In recent weeks there hasn’t been much data supporting sustained economic stability, much less a recovery. However, it does appear the economy is no longer in a freefall, and we are likely experiencing the depths of this downturn. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, 6.3 million people have lost their jobs in the United States.

Okay, I called this story Cincinnati (it took me a while to spell the city correctly with two N’s and one T) but when I landed (after a 90-minute flight from New York) we were across the river in Kentucky at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport, one of Delta Airline’s largest hubs. For my three day visit we crossed and re-crossed the Ohio River (owned by Kentucky) without paying a toll. As a New Yorker it is a big deal (and expensive) to cross over to New Jersey.
