Variable-data printing (VDP) is a form of on-demand printing in which elements such as text, graphics and images may be varied from one printed piece to the next, without stopping or slowing down the printing process and using information from a database or external file. For example, a set of personalized letters, each with the same basic layout, can be printed with a different name and address on each letter. Variable data printing is commonly used for direct marketing, brand management, advertising and invoicing on self-mailers, brochures or postcard campaigns.
On-demand printing is done using web-to-print technology. This technology is having lots of success thanks to digital equipment manufacturers, software developers, database visionaries, etc. This technology typically includes and online storefront, administrative interface, and asset management. The online storefront enables customers to go to the website, view options, get pricing, customize content, place orders, review proofs and submit jobs. ZenPrint offers a solution with an admin that will let you do everything from running special pricing, enter promo codes and managing inventory to orchestrating all the print processes needed to get the jobs from proofs to production, and in some cases, even onto the delivery truck.
VDP works similar to your desktop printer at home. If needed you can print 1 sheet of paper at a time. This makes it possible to offer quantities of 25 or 150 economically to your customers. Many of the difficult steps required for offset printing are wiped out (namely, making films and color proofs, manually stripping the pieces together, and making plates), thus giving a more affordable print solution with smaller print runs. Since the invention of the original printing press, people have always wanted a way to print short-run four-color jobs. With the introduction of the Indigo, Igen and Heidelberg digital presses, this is now possible. Among the many great things about digital printing is its ability to produce fast results and the availability of variable data printing
Businesses that franchise and direct sales companies both benefit greatly from using variable data print. Costa Vida uses a storefront offered by ZenPrint, allowing all there franchises to order customizable menu’s, business cards, window clings, etc. This permits the marketing department to manage their brand effectively and each franchise can order custom print on the fly.
The Liberty, women’s basketball team had success using variable data printing to send out over 15,000 postcards to previous season ticket buyers who hadn’t renewed, featuring a team jersey hanging on a locker with the recipient’s name printed on it. VDP offered the opportunity to create that kind of campaign, says Amy Scheer, SVP, marketing and sales at The Liberty.
