Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced Wednesday that a total of $662,370 has been awarded to Iowa organizations to support counseling and other assistance to home owners in danger of losing their homes.

These funds were made available from the U.S. Housing and Urban Developments (HUD) Neighborworks Program. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate panel that funds housing initiatives.

Many Iowans are in danger of losing their homes in these difficult times. Harkin said. This funding will provide Iowans with the information they need to help them as they try to keep their homes.

These organizations provide invaluable, free assistance to families at risk of losing their homes, helping clients to understand the complex foreclosure process and identifying possible courses of action so they can make informed decisions and take action.

It is estimated that nearly 500,000 families facing the threat of foreclosure will be directly assisted with this funding and many more will be helped by the training of foreclosure counselors.

The individual grant awards are as follows:

Iowa Finance Authority : $651,750 Des Moines Neighborhood Finance Corp.: $10,620
