While that’s sound advice you’ll find in many leadership books, energy analysts, Maryland lawmakers and shareholders of Baltimore’s Constellation Energy.

By now, the rapid downfall of Constellation and its shareholder value have been well-chronicled. The company, of which Shattuck is CEO, was swept away by the tumult of the Sept. 15 bankruptcy filing of Lehman Brothers Holdings, the Wall Street investment bank that extended Constellation a $150 million line of credit. Three days later, Constellation, after watching its stock price plummet and facing a credit downgrade, struck a deal to sell to MidAmerican Energy Holdings for $4.7 billion.
